How did Vietnamese civilians view Americans or U.S. troops during and after the Vietnam War?

 


About 12 years ago, nearly 40 years after my return from Vietnam, I went to a Vietnamese restaurant. As I was paying, I noticed a photo of a young ARVN soldier and a map of Vietnam on the wall. The restaurant owner, an older Vietnamese man, came over to take my payment. I asked if the soldier in the photo was him, and he confirmed it. I then pointed out where I had been stationed in Vietnam.

He came around the counter, shook my hand, and said, 'Thank you for what you tried to do for my country.' Hearing that was the first time in 40 years I felt such acknowledgment. At that moment, all my anger about the war faded away, thanks to his simple gesture of thanks.

Did American soldiers have girlfriends from Vietnam during the war?

Sir, I'd say some soldiers did form long-term relationships, but most didn't. Many sought short-term, casual encounters during their time in Southeast Asia.
